How Do You Say That?

If you've been quietly avoiding saying this word out loud, you're not alone. Here's how the locals say it.

Gi Or No Gi. What's The Difference?

The Traditional Kimono

The Gi is the traditional woven cotton jacket, pants, and belt, the uniform most people picture when they think of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Grips on the collar, sleeves, and pants become part of the technique itself, which is why Gi training tends to be slower and more technical.

  • Jacket, pants, and belt, worn over a rashguard or t shirt
  • Grips on the fabric are a core part of the game
  • The traditional foundation of the sport
  • Belt colour shows rank and is worn with the Gi

Rashguard And Shorts

No Gi strips the uniform back to a rashguard and grappling shorts, no jacket, no fabric grips. Without material to grab, the pace picks up and the game shifts closer to wrestling and submission grappling.

  • Rashguard (long or short sleeve) and grappling shorts
  • No collar or sleeve grips
  • Faster paced, closer to wrestling and MMA style grappling
  • No belt worn during No Gi classes, rank is tracked separately

Why We Wear Uniforms

A uniform isn't just tradition for tradition's sake. In the Gi, the jacket and pants genuinely change the technique, learning to fight through grips and control fabric is a real, transferable skill, especially for self defence, where an attacker's clothing is exactly what you might need to control.

A proper rashguard and shorts for No Gi matter too, loose t shirts and boardshorts get grabbed, twisted, and generally get in the way of both people training safely.

There's also something simpler at play. Everyone in the same uniform, working through the same belt system, training toward the same standard, that's part of what makes the mats feel like a team rather than a room of strangers.
