Lucas Costa Santana

Lucas Costa Santana

Head Coach & Founder • 4th Degree Black Belt

If you ask Lucas a quick question after class, don't be surprised if you're still talking twenty minutes later, it's almost expected. Whether you're talking Jiu Jitsu, family, travel or life in general, he loves getting to know the people who walk through the doors.

Lucas started training in 1999 and received his black belt in 2010. Along the way, he earned the nickname "The Encyclopedia of Jiu Jitsu" thanks to his incredible memory for techniques, positions and matches. He has an incredible ability to remember the smallest details and loves breaking down complex positions into simple, practical concepts that anyone can understand.

Originally from Aracaju, Brazil, Lucas is a proud husband, father of three, lifelong jiu jitsu competitor, surfer and more recently an amateur fisherman.

While coaching is his passion, Lucas still loves to compete. Now in his 40s, he's still chasing the biggest titles in the sport, from the World and European Championships to the Abu Dhabi Pro. He believes the best coaches never stop learning, and he leads by example, challenging himself every day to improve both on and off the mats.

Over the years, Lucas has coached three World Champions. What makes those achievements remarkable isn't that they became World Champions, it's that they weren't elite athletes. They were everyday people with jobs, families and busy lives who committed to turning up, learning and trusting the process.

Lucas has now held his black belt for 16 of his 27 years training, a depth of experience that shapes everything about how classes are taught at Legacy, from the smallest technical detail to the way the whole academy is run.

Ask Lucas what he's most proud of, though, and it probably won't be the medals. It's seeing people discover they're capable of more than they thought, whether that's stepping onto the competition mats for the first time, helping a shy child find their confidence, or watching someone leave class standing a little taller than when they walked in.

Sean Hancock

Sean Hancock

Peregian Beach Head Coach • Black Belt

Sean has a habit of turning complicated techniques into simple ones. Maybe that's the mechanical engineer in him.

Before becoming a full time coach, Sean worked as a mechanical engineer, and that way of thinking never really left. He loves understanding how things work, breaking movements down into their individual parts, and helping people understand the mechanics behind every technique. If you've ever had a moment where something in Jiu Jitsu suddenly clicked, there's a good chance Sean was the one explaining it.

Sean began his Jiu Jitsu journey under Lucas as a white belt and has grown through every belt at Legacy to earn his black belt. Today, he leads our Peregian academy, where he's known for his practical coaching style, his cheeky sense of humour and his ability to make everyone feel welcome.

Outside the academy, Sean is a family man, a regular competitor, and a lifelong metal fan. He's always up for a laugh, doesn't take himself too seriously, and somehow manages to make even the hardest training sessions enjoyable.

Ramey Escher

Ramey Escher

Brown Belt

Some people train Jiu Jitsu. Ramey studies it. He loves understanding the small details, asking questions, and helping others make sense of techniques that once felt impossible. His love for Jiu Jitsu is obvious the moment you meet him, and his enthusiasm for learning is infectious.

Since starting Jiu Jitsu nearly five years ago, he's progressed through the ranks at an incredible pace. One of his favourite competition memories came at Grappling Industries, where he submitted two black belts on his way to winning gold as a blue belt.

These days, life looks a little different. As a proud dad to two young boys, Ramey's biggest focus is his family. Between fatherhood, coaching and his work supporting people with disabilities, he's learned firsthand what it's like to juggle a busy life while making time for training.

Ramey also holds a university degree in teaching, and those experiences shape the way he coaches. He understands that everyone learns differently and has a calm, patient approach that helps people of all ages and abilities feel comfortable on the mats.

When he's not at the academy, you'll probably find him hanging out with his family or squeezing in a game of League of Legends. If you ask him what superpower he'd choose, the answer is always the same: perfect recovery, so he could spend even more time on the mats.

Neil Sanchez

Purple Belt

If you hear laughter coming from a class, there's a good chance Sanchez is teaching it.

His energy is contagious. Whether he's coaching kids through their first class or pushing experienced students to improve, he has a way of making people work hard while still enjoying themselves.

With a background in Physical Education, Sanchez understands how people learn through movement. His coaching style is active, engaging and full of encouragement, helping students build confidence while developing solid technique.

Away from coaching, Sanchez is a passionate competitor who believes the best way to keep growing is to keep challenging yourself. He brings that same mindset into every class, leading by example while never taking himself too seriously.

If you ask anyone at Legacy what stands out most about Sanchez, they'll probably say the same thing: his smile. It's hard not to enjoy training when he's around.
