The Sunshine Coast Open Was A Home Game

Caloundra Indoor Stadium, ten minutes down the road, and a full squad of Legacy kids, teens, coaches and adults stepping onto the competition mats. For plenty of them, it was their very first time competing. Here's how the day went.

A big turnout, right on our doorstep

No flights, no overnight stays, just a short drive to Caloundra Indoor Stadium with the whole family able to come along and watch. That made this one of the biggest turnouts we've had, with a full squad of Legacy kids, teens and adults out there competing, backed up by coaches in the corner for every single match.

As a team, we finished 2nd in Male Gi and 1st in Male No-Gi, a great result against the other academies out there on the day. But the number that matters more to us is how many of our own students stepped onto a competition mat, plenty of them for the very first time.

How our people went

Ayden Moore

Took the win, a great result on the day.

Coach Sean

Gold, leading from the front as always.

Noah

Gave it absolutely everything out there. Exactly the kind of effort we love to see.

Aria, our littlest competitor

Not just her jiu jitsu, her sportsmanship stood out all day, cheering on and helping her teammates between matches.

For a good chunk of our squad, this was their first ever competition. Some of these kids walked into the gym on day one too shy to look their coach in the eye, and here they were stepping onto a mat in front of a full stadium. Win or lose, they all walked away a little stronger and a little prouder of themselves. That's the stuff we're really proud of.

What I love most about seeing our kids compete is watching them face something that is hard for them and come out the other side. Sometimes it's nerves, sometimes it's confidence, sometimes they're scared of losing or making a mistake. Then you see them step on the mats, face it and realise they can do hard things. Win or lose, they walk away a little stronger and more confident in themselves. That's the part I love.
