Competition  /  August 2026

The team went to Nationals

Our coaches and a group of our students headed to Melbourne for the Australian Jiu Jitsu Championship, the biggest event on the calendar in this country. Here's how the weekend went.

A small team that hits above its weight

One of the best parts of the weekend was seeing the whole Legacy family in one place. Our crew met up with Legacy teammates from Sydney and academies right across the country, including Thiago, Lucas's own coach and the founder of Legacy, who was there competing and leading from the front alongside the rest of the Legacy coaches and students.

A 3rd overall in the men's Gi and 4th in the men's No-Gi is a serious result when you look at the size of the teams around us on that list. Legacy is a small team by comparison, and we still show up in a mighty way. When everyone comes together in the one room wearing the same patch, it's something to watch.

How our people went

Professor Lucas

Australian National Champion, No-Gi, which makes him a five time national champion. He took 2nd in the Gi as well, winning his early matches by submission before losing the final on points in the last ten seconds, in one of the toughest matches of the day.

Coach Sean

2nd in No-Gi and 2nd in the Gi, through a very tough bracket.

Coach Sanchez

Some seriously hard matches, and he went after every one of them.

Glen

Australian National Champion, our second title of the weekend.

Barry

3rd place.

Gui

Flew the flag for the Sunshine Coast kids team on Sunday and brought home 3rd place.

To everyone who stepped out onto that mat, however your day went, you did this room proud.

Congratulations to the whole team. That was the most stacked Nationals I've seen, and Legacy Sunshine Coast was so well represented out there. We finished 4th in No-Gi and 3rd in Gi, sitting just behind the big competition teams like Absolute MMA, Sydney West and AET. Not bad for an old school Gi team, as they like to call us. Oss.

Jiu jitsu builds us physically, but I think what it does for us mentally and emotionally is just as important. That is one of the biggest gifts of jiu jitsu. So enjoy all of it. The training, the hard days, looking after your body, the strength work and the people beside you. Competition is a great test and I love it, but it is only a small part of why we do this.

Whatever part of the journey you are in, be grateful for it. Don't rush it. Keep showing up and enjoy it.
